KUALA LUMPUR: Most of us remember working on simple collage projects using old newspaper and magazine cuttings back in school.

Eleven contemporary artists will show us how it is really done with an exhibition of their masterpieces at RA Fine Arts Gallery.

The 11 artists are Elias Yamani Ismail, Fadly Sabran, Wening Cheah, Haslin Ismail, Hushinaidi Abdul Hamid, Izmir Omar, Khairul Azmir Shoib, Tan Hui Koon, Marfizal Azuan Marsuki, Muhd Syafiq Fawwaz and Rini Fauzan Mohamed Zuhairi.

Most of them budding artists are also lecturers in universities and colleges.

Some have created their collage in multimedia format, while some have used
more prosaic items like medicine bottles and face-welding masks to form their art pieces.

“My artwork is inspired by J.R. R Tolkien’s character, Orc, from Lord of The Rings. My view of the ‘dark side’ is, some characters may look evil but they are not necessarily so portray negativity,” said Haslin

Tan said several of her works were computer manipulations that were printed in the digital format.

“I’m inspired by Lewis Carroll’s Alice In Wonderland novel, written by English author Charles Lutwidge Dodgson. Alice becomes big and small after drinking a potion, which affects her perspective of her environment, which would change in size accordingly. I used the same concept of ‘exaggeration’ concept in some of my artworks,” said Tan.

Elias converted welding masks into interesting collage pieces.

“I was told that many employers in the United States browse through their future employees’ Facebook profiles before calling them for interviews.

“You can’t really see a person’s true personality during interviews, but you get to understand their lifestyles by seeing the pictures they upload on the social network.

“But sometimes, people fake their identity in the Internet and that’s what I’m trying to portray in my artwork — the many faces of people,” said Elias.

For his piece depicting timeline, he gathered hundreds of bread expiry tags to form the collage.

Lecturer and part-time PhD student, Hushinaidi, Abdul Hamid, said he created his own colour pigment from rocks for his artwork “Awas”, or “Beware”.
Rini collage is the only piece that is shown on an LCD screen.

“My topic is environmental needs. On the LCD screen, you can see a picture of a busy factory but beneath it, there’s a box which indicates ‘Environmental Fund’,” said Rini.

He said according to the Environmental Quality Act (EQA 1974), all big players in the factory production field manufacturing sector need to contribute to the environmental fund.
“The fund will be channelled to address environmental-related problems but not much importance is given to this fund.

“Through my collage, I hope to convey an important message, that all factories in Malaysia have a big role in maintaining a healthy environment,” said Rini.

“Collage” is showing until Sunday.

RA Fine Arts Gallery is at 6, Jalan Aman, off Jalan Tun Razak.

It is on daily except Sundays, from 11am to 6pm. Exhibition ends on November 29.

The technique used is assemblage that combine video, sound, light, kinetic, movement, motion sensory and digital collage.
